About Private Somm
An Inspired Wine Club
We set up Private Somm to connect wine drinkers to sommeliers. To utilise the knowledge, experience and expertise of our friends and colleagues in the industry, pair that up with some wonderful, hand-made, well-crafted wines, and put all of that into a seamless delivery service.
We didn't like the idea of mysterious and unnamed "buyers" choosing what goes in to our wine boxes, so we wanted to put the spotlight onto the sommeliers, and let them explain what they've chosen and why. Every single one of the UK's best sommeliers has different loves and passions, and we want to explore them all!
We both come from a hospitality background, so creating something that was friendly and personable, and with exemplary service was really important to us. If you have any comments, suggestions or feedback on any part of Private Somm please let us know, we love hearing from you.
Nicolas hails from Strasbourg, a city with the romantic vineyards of Alsace on one side and the German border on the other. He worked his way up the sommelier ladder in a slate of top fine dining restaurants across Europe, via a stint in Hong Kong at the Shangri-La Hotel, before settling in London as the Head Sommelier at Jason Atherton's City Social, a Michelin-starred restaurant with striking views of the city of London from its perch on the 24th floor of Tower 42, until 2018.
Currently, when not running Private Somm, Nicolas makes wine in Austria with his former Assistant Head Sommelier, Pierrick Gorrichon, under the Somm in the Must label. He also consults for wineries from around the world, helping them find global distributors and building their export business.
Born and bred in London, when Sophie was 13 her father decided to move to the Scottish Highlands and run a small country house hotel. Sophie spent her school holidays working in the hotel - as kitchen porter, housekeeping, restaurant manager, barwoman and everything in between. Wine caught her eye at university, where she spent slightly more time studying wine than her degree.
Back in London she worked in a hybrid wine shop/bar, before seguing to restaurant sales, and has never looked back. She says she has The Dream Job, one that combines wine, getting to know people who love wine, and her third love... Microsoft Excel.
